Life with a Munchkin

They are fun, confident cats that love toys and attention. They can’t jump as high as other cats, so they need steps and low perches to reach favorite spots.

Great for
  • Families who want a playful, sociable cat
  • People who will add ramps and low perches
Think twice if
  • You’re uneasy about a breed many vets say shouldn’t be bred
  • You couldn’t afford possible joint or spine care later
Before you buy

CFA doesn’t recognize the Munchkin, and many vets and welfare groups, including International Cat Care, advise against breeding cats for short legs. TICA does register them.

Care tips
  • Add ramps or pet steps to beds and sofas.
  • Keep them slim to protect their joints.
  • Brush weekly.

Health

Short-legged cats may have a higher risk of arthritis, a curved spine (lordosis) and a sunken chest (pectus excavatum). Two short-legged parents can produce kittens that don’t survive.

Ask the breeder for
  • Proof the breeder never mates two short-legged cats
  • Vet check of the kitten’s chest and spine
  • Meet the parents and watch how they move
Typical US price$1,000–$2,500
RegistriesTICATICA only — ask for papers

Prices are rough ranges from registered breeders and vary by line, color and region. A much cheaper “purebred” kitten is a common scam sign.
